Antigoni Goni and Laura Gilbert are proud to announce the release of their debut duo disc: Songs and Dances from the New Village (Koch international Classics- 7652).
The disc borrows its name from a fantastic new work, commissioned by the duo, by the San Francisco based, Serbian composer and guitarist, Dusan Bogdanovic.
Bogdanovic's "Songs and Dances from the New Village", as all the repertoire on the disc, finds its roots in the folk-inspired music of?the composer's origin. Also included on the disc are works by Ravi Shankar, Atannas Orkouzounov, Robert Beaser, Jose Manuel Lezcano, George Mavroedes, and Jose Luis Merlin.
The disc truly delivers on its promise to take the listener across cultural boundaries into diverse musical worlds, some that are more familiar, and others that are breathtakingly exotic and powerful. Each composer on the disc understands both guitar and flute intimately; the music is written both idiomatically for the instruments, and in a completely convincing stylistic idiom, whether evoking music of the Balkans, India, or Appalachia. Gilbert and Goni are able to leap in whichever direction the music demands, leaving far behind any notion that they are musicians limited in any way by their classical backgrounds- far from it, for their stunning musicianship gives them a sure-footed ease dancing to the liveliest rhythms that it seems any village in either hemisphere can throw at them.
